Endemic to the Northern and Western Cape provinces of South Africa, Crossyne flava, the yellow parasol lily, is a bulbous member of the Amaryllidaceae. Its strap-shaped leaves, fringed with long whitish or straw-coloured bristles and marked beneath with small angular red spots, appear after flowering. Blooming occurs in late summer or autumn, on a leafless stalk bearing an umbel of up to 200 small pale yellow flowers, pollinated by honeybees and bee flies. The plant requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a strictly dry summer dormancy.
