Cyanella hyacinthoides 2

The exact species of this Cyanella could not be confirmed with certainty (accession no. 2 of the cultivated stock, distinct from the previous one); the following description is therefore given at genus level. Cyanella (family Tecophilaeaceae) is a South African cormous genus of around ten species confined to the winter-rainfall Cape region. It is distinguished by loose clusters of blue, mauve or white, often fragrant flowers with asymmetric stamens whose five upper filaments are arched and fused for part of their length. The basal, rosette-forming foliage is variable, sometimes narrow and erect, sometimes broader and flat. Cultivation requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
