Cyanella hyacinthoides1

The exact species of this Cyanella could not be confirmed with certainty (accession no. 1 of the cultivated stock); the following description is therefore given at genus level. Cyanella is a small South African genus in the family Tecophilaeaceae, cormous, with around ten species concentrated in the winter-rainfall Cape region. The leaves, often in a basal rosette, are slender and sometimes wavy; the flowers, carried in loose clusters, are blue, mauve or white and fragrant, with characteristic stamens whose upper filaments are arched and partly fused. Flowering occurs from winter to early summer. Cultivation requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
