Cyclamen balearicum

Endemic to the western Mediterranean basin, Cyclamen balearicum grows in the Balearic Islands (Majorca, Menorca, Ibiza), Corsica and Languedoc-Roussillon, on limestone, in shady woodland of holm oak or pine, up to 1400 m altitude. Its small, flattened tuber bears roots emerging from the centre of its base. The leaves, grey-green marbled with silver, are less deeply lobed than those of Cyclamen repandum. In spring, small fragrant flowers open, white with pale pink veins, lacking auricles at the base of the petals. Grow in light shade, well-drained limestone soil, with a dry summer rest.
