Cyclamen persicum — Cyclamen de Perse
All the hybrid cyclamens come from this species. Easy to recognise: leaves and flowers upright, spring flowering and the flower stems do NOT coil up when bearing fruits. As it is not very frosthardy, cultivation in an open garden to be reserved to the coastal areas. The flower colour is variable from almost white to dark pink.
The genus
The horticultural Cyclamen (mini or maxi, white, red, purple, etc) have largely dominated the botanical species. The latter are small, discrete, have quite a different charm and deserve a special place in the garden. These species can be grown in pots, in shaded lawns or wooded areas and produce a multitude of parfumed flowers. The decorative leaves provide an interesting groundcover during the winter. Many species will naturalise and spread discretely throughout the garden.The selection presented will allow flowering from August until the spring. As Cyclamen don't like to be moved, we lift our bulbs just before expedition and it is recommended to replant them straightaway on reception in a welldrained shaded area.
