Native to Assam, the Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan), Myanmar, China and Vietnam, Cymbidium erythraeum grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte on mossy banks in open evergreen forest between 1000 and 2400 m elevation. This pseudobulbous orchid bears long, arching leaves and produces, in winter, an arching to pendulous spike of several fragrant flowers about 8 cm across, sepals and petals typically streaked red-brown on a cream ground. Its cultivation, in cool conditions, differs little from that of standard Cymbidium hybrids, requiring bright light and reduced watering through winter.
