Cyrtanthus sanguineus
A freely flowering species from Natal with large flaming-red flowers about 10cm high from late summer well into autumn. Generally evergreen but if the summer is dry, it will go dormant and start to flower in september with the new leaves. Also makes a very good potplant or in hanging baskets A note from South Africa: "C. sanguineus normally grows in rock crevices, and it flowers best if it is over-crowded. So let your pot get absolutely full of bulbs and don't be tempted to split them and re-pot them."
The genus
A genus which mainly originates from areas with fairly regular rainfall in the eastern part of South Africa. They are very often found at higher elevations in moist places near streams.Cyrtanthus are mostly summer-growers or evergreen (but a few have a relatively short summer resting period). The flexibility of its growing cycle gives Cyrtanthus an interesting horticultural potential, which is still to be explored.
