Dahlia tenuicaulis

Native to the mountains of southern Mexico (Oaxaca, Jalisco, Michoacán), at elevations of 2600-3000 m, Dahlia tenuicaulis is a "tree dahlia" with tuberous roots, reaching nearly 5 m in height. Its foliage is broad and bushy, with smaller leaflets than other tree dahlias, and new growth is tinged maroon. Flowering occurs in late autumn, producing single flowers about 8 cm across in light lavender to rosy tones. It is grown in rich, well-drained soil, in a sunny to lightly shaded position, with the tubers protected over winter in cold climates.
