The genus Delphinium (Ranunculaceae) comprises around 250 annual, biennial and perennial species from the Northern Hemisphere, notably the western United States. The roots are not true tubers but thicken with age into a woody crown. Palmately lobed foliage, divided into 3-7 segments, supports tall, upright flower spikes 1-2.5 m depending on variety, densely packed with blooms most often blue, though white, pink, violet and red forms exist. Flowering occurs in summer. Grown in full sun, cool moist well-drained soil, sheltered from wind. As the exact species could not be confirmed, this description covers the genus generally.
