'Desert candle' is another common name for Eremurus himalaicus, referring to its tall flowering stem standing upright like a candle, reaching up to 2 m. Native to the Himalayan foothills from Afghanistan to Kashmir, this tuberous-rooted plant grows on arid, rocky slopes. In spring it produces a dense spike of small, star-shaped white flowers. Grow in well-drained soil, in full sun, with a dry summer rest; protect young spring growth from frost.
