Dichelostemma capitatum (= pulchellum )

Native to the western United States (California, Arizona, Oregon and others) and north-western Mexico, Dichelostemma capitatum grows in open grassland and on dry hillsides. This Asparagaceae (formerly classified among the Liliaceae) produces two or three narrow basal leaves from a corm, often withered by flowering time, and a leafless, wiry stem 30-75 cm tall. In spring, it bears a dense umbel of small, bell-shaped, purple-blue flowers, occasionally white. Its edible corms were traditionally harvested and cooked by Native American peoples. The plant needs full sun, well-drained soil, and a dry summer rest.
