Epidendrum encyclia hanburyi

Native to Mexico and Guatemala, Encyclia hanburyi most often grows terrestrially in clay soil within oak-pine woodlands, between 1200 and 1800 m elevation — an unusual habit for this predominantly epiphytic genus. Its tightly clustered, cone-shaped pseudobulbs bear one or two sword-shaped leaves. From late winter to early summer, a simple or branched inflorescence up to 1 m tall carries numerous dark rose, lightly fragrant flowers about 5 cm across. A warm-growing species, it requires a free-draining substrate and bright light.
