Eulophia speciosa

Distributed from Ethiopia to South Africa, as well as in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, Eulophia speciosa is a terrestrial orchid growing from underground pseudobulbs in grasslands on sandy or clay soils. Its fleshy, lance-shaped leaves are semi-erect. A leafless, lateral flowering stem, 40 to 80 cm tall, carries up to 30 large yellow flowers marked with red on the lip, arranged in a loose raceme. The deceptive flowers offer no nectar reward and are pollinated by large carpenter bees. In South Africa all wild orchids are legally protected. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
