Ferraria schaeferi

Native to the arid winter-rainfall region from northern Namaqualand to southern Namibia, Ferraria schaeferi grows in deep sands and dunes, mainly along the coast or a short distance inland. This cormous Iridaceae reaches 20 to 50 cm tall, with thick, leathery leaves arranged in a fan. The yellow flowers, spotted dark brown with crisped margins, are sweetly scented but short-lived, lasting only a single day. The plant also spreads vegetatively by long underground runners from the base of the stem, each terminating in a new corm. It requires well-drained sandy soil and a sunny position.
