Ferraria uncinata

Native to sandstone slopes and rock outcrops of the northwestern and southwestern Cape, South Africa, Ferraria uncinata - the black flag iris - is a 10-40 cm geophyte with sword-shaped leaves. Its blue-violet flowers, marked with brown and finely crisped and toothed with greenish-yellow margins, give off an unpleasant odour and open for only a single day, in August-September. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest.
