Babiana framesii

Babiana framesii (Iridaceae) is endemic to the Bokkeveld Plateau near Nieuwoudtville in South Africa's Northern Cape, where it grows in crevices of dolerite outcrops in karroid renosterveld. This small cormous geophyte, about 10 cm tall, bears a fan of pleated, hairy leaves. From July to September it opens dark blue-violet zygomorphic flowers, the lower tepals marked with white arrow shapes outlined in darker blue or red. The species is rare but its populations are stable. Grow as a winter-grower in full sun, very sharply drained compost, dry in summer.
