Freesia (Iridaceae) comprises sixteen species from southern Africa, concentrated in the winter-rainfall Cape region; only Freesia grandiflora extends into tropical Africa. They are geophytes with fibrous-tunicked corms and plane leaves arranged in a basal fan, carrying a spike characteristically bent near its base. The zygomorphic, long-tubed flowers are white, yellow, pink or red, usually marked on the lower tepals and very often strongly fragrant. Grow them as winter-growing plants in full sun and sharply drained sandy soil, kept dry through summer dormancy.
