Freesia fergusoniae

Endemic to the Western Cape of South Africa, growing on clay soils in renosterveld between Swellendam, Oudtshoorn and Mossel Bay, Freesia fergusoniae is a small cormous Iridaceae, 6 to 20 cm tall, with 7 to 13 prostrate to inclined leaves. The horizontal or drooping spike bears sweetly scented pale yellow to cream flowers, marked with dull purple on the reverse and orange at the base of the lower tepals. It flowers best in open or recently cleared sites, and has lost over 70% of its habitat to agriculture. Cultivation requires well-drained soil and full sun.
