Freesia grandiflora

Native to coastal regions of southern and eastern Africa (from KwaZulu-Natal to Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania), Freesia grandiflora grows at forest margins and in deciduous scrub, on humus-rich soils, sometimes near streams or on termite mounds. This cormous Iridaceae produces a fan of soft, bright green leaves and unscented, star-shaped scarlet tubular flowers with a darker red blotch at the centre, likely butterfly-pollinated. It flowers in autumn, when little else is in bloom. Grow in light shade on rich, well-drained soil.
