Freesia laxa

Recently the genus Anomatheca was reduced into Freesia . Late spring a multitude of small brick red flowers appear (unscented). Spreads very easily by seed. In cooler climates it can remain virtually evergreen during the summer. Has been found surviving under snow with very cold winters.

The genus

This South African genus is generally known by its hybrids. But here are the originals: they are smaller and less gaudy, but so fragrant that it might bowl you over, if not, at least the parfum will take you back to memories of the past. Freesia are wintergrowers, not very hardy, and to be placed in a well sheltered warm spot.
