Freesia occidentalis

Native to the arid interior of the northwestern Cape and western Karoo, South Africa, from the Calvinia basin to the margins of the Cederberg and Swartruggens, Freesia occidentalis grows in arid fynbos on stony sandstone soil, preferring south-facing slopes. This 9-50 cm geophyte produces, from mid-August to September, strongly fragrant (rose and pepper notes) cream to pale yellow flowers, sometimes flushed mauve, with the lowest tepal and the margins of the lateral tepals bright yellow, marked with a dark purplish midline. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
