Galanthus nivalis — Perceneige commun

Widespread across Europe, from the Pyrenees to Ukraine and northern Greece, Galanthus nivalis, the common snowdrop, is a small bulbous perennial with narrow, grey-green leaves. From late winter onward, often pushing through snow, it bears a single nodding white flower, faintly scented, with three spreading outer tepals and three shorter inner tepals marked with a green spot. A valuable early nectar source for bees, it naturalises readily in cool, humus-rich soil in sun or partial shade, thriving equally in woodland and lawns.
