Galaxia ovata

Widespread across the Cape region of South Africa, Galaxia ovata (now often classified as Moraea galaxia) grows on flats and plateaus, mainly on sandstone soils in the winter-rainfall areas. This is a small cormous Iridaceae, barely reaching 4 cm tall, forming a basal tuft of broad, ovate leaves that lie prostrate or nearly so, with thickened, densely ciliate margins. The short-lived yellow flowers, salver-shaped with tepals cupped at the base, open in winter and early spring. It requires well-drained sandy to gravelly soil and a sunny position.
