Geissorhiza monantha

Most likely Geissorhiza monanthos, this plant is native to sandy slopes of the Western Cape in South Africa, within the granite-derived Swartland renosterveld, a habitat now critically threatened. It is a small cormous plant with fine, narrow, grassy foliage that dies back in summer. In spring it produces flowers about 5 cm across, ranging from plum to wine-red, marked with grey striping at the centre of the tepals. Its total population, fragmented into small colonies of fewer than a thousand individuals, remains vulnerable. It requires full sun, moderate to low watering, well-drained soil, and dry summer dormancy.
