Geissorhiza radians

Endemic to a small area north of Cape Town (around Darling, South Africa), Geissorhiza radians is a threatened Iridaceae with fewer than ten known populations. This 8-16 cm geophyte bears, in spring, one to six large, deeply cupped flowers, vivid blue with a red base edged in white and a dark central mark. Leaves are linear with thickened margins. It grows in damp sandy soil, sometimes forming vast colonies in seasonally marshy sites, dying back to a small corm through the dry summer.
