The correct name for this plant is Gelasine uruguaiensis, described by Pierfelice Ravenna in 1984 and endemic to Uruguay, where it grows in grasslands of the Río de la Plata region under a warm climate punctuated by light winter frosts. This bulbous Iridaceae comprises two subspecies, uruguaiensis and orientalis. It grows from autumn through spring, followed by a dry summer rest. Like other Gelasine, it produces narrow, pleated foliage and short-lived, blue, star-shaped flowers typical of the Tigridieae. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and protection from prolonged frost in winter.
