Geranium canariense

Native to the Canary Islands and Madeira, Geranium canariense is a biennial or short-lived perennial that persists in the garden through self-seeding. It forms a basal clump of large, rounded, deeply divided, palmate leaves, attractive throughout the growing season. In May-June, upright flowering stems 60 to 90 cm tall bear loose inflorescences of rounded, 5-petalled flowers, pink to magenta with darker veining. Suited to Mediterranean-type climates, it thrives in well-drained soil, in sun to part shade, and does not tolerate prolonged frost.
