Gladiolus abbreviatus

Endemic to the southwestern Cape of South Africa, growing on clay and shale banks in renosterveld from Caledon to Riversdale, Gladiolus abbreviatus (formerly placed in the genus Homoglossum) is a cormous Iridaceae with an atypical appearance for the genus, bearing grossly unequal, dark reddish-brown tepals, and reaching 30 to 65 cm tall. Its unusually shaped flowers for a Gladiolus are pollinated by sunbirds. The species long puzzled botanists before being placed within Gladiolus. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
