Native to a limited area between Caledon and Bredasdorp in the Western Cape, South Africa, Gladiolus acuminatus grows on flats and north-facing slopes within renosterveld vegetation. This cormous species produces narrow, sword-shaped leaves and a flowering stem bearing, from mid-August to late September, pale cream to yellowish tubular flowers with a strong sweet scent. The long floral tube and fragrance suggest moth pollination. Known from only a handful of wild collections, it is listed as Endangered on the Red List of South African Plants.
