Gladiolus alatus

Widespread from southern Namaqualand to the Cape Peninsula and east to Caledon and Bredasdorp, South Africa, Gladiolus alatus - nicknamed painted ladies or kalkoentjie - grows on sandy and gravelly flats and slopes. This 8-25 cm cormous geophyte, with a ridged or winged stem, produces a spike of 2 to 5 fragrant orange flowers marked with yellow to green. It flowers in the southern spring, August to October. It requires well-drained sandy to gravelly soil and a sunny position.
