Gladiolus BB sp 2

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
This plant, not identified to species level, belongs to the genus Gladiolus (Iridaceae), which comprises around 260 species mainly native to southern Africa, with a few Mediterranean representatives. The rounded corm, protected by brown fibrous tunics, produces narrow sword-shaped leaves arranged in a fan. The upright stem bears a one-sided spike of funnel-shaped, six-tepalled flowers, whose colour and flowering time, from spring to summer, vary by species. Labelled 'sp 2' at this nursery, this accession awaits precise identification. It requires well-drained soil, full sun and a dry dormancy suited to its cycle.
