Gladiolus brevifolius

Widespread from Piketberg to the Cape Peninsula and east to Montagu, South Africa, Gladiolus brevifolius - nicknamed Autumn Pipes - grows on sandstone and shale slopes. It is one of the commonest autumn-flowering Gladiolus in the winter-rainfall zone, blooming in March-April before its leaves appear. This delicate 20-50 cm geophyte produces a spike of 5 to 12 small pink, grey or brownish flowers marked with yellow on the lower tepals, usually unscented. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
