Gladiolus carinatus

Native to the Western Cape (South Africa), Gladiolus carinatus grows in sandy soils, notably in coastal habitats and lowland fynbos. This cormous geophyte reaches 50 cm tall, with three narrow, linear leaves with a thickened midrib. In spring, an erect spike of 4 to 6 flowers, grey-blue to deep violet and marked with a yellow band sometimes edged with purple streaks on the lower tepals, gives off a pronounced sweet scent (scentless forms are also known). Locally called "blou kalkoentjie", it likes full sun, free-draining soil and a dry summer rest.
