Gladiolus communis

Gladiolus communis, the common or corn-flag gladiolus, is native to the Mediterranean basin, from temperate North Africa to western Asia and the Caucasus. A vigorous cormous perennial, it forms linear sword-shaped leaves and, in spring (May-June), an upright spike of bright to deep pink, orchid-like flowers: three broad upper lobes forming a loose hood and three narrower lower lobes turned downward. It grows wild in Mediterranean olive groves and grassland. Two subspecies are recognised, including subsp. byzantinus. Easy to grow in full sun and well-drained soil.
