Gladiolus gracilis

Widespread in South Africa on clay, sometimes granite, slopes, Gladiolus gracilis - nicknamed Blou Pypie - is a slender Gladiolus up to 45 cm, with narrow leaves often rolled inward giving a cylindrical appearance. It produces, from June to August, a spike of 2 to 5 fragrant pale blue, occasionally pink to mauve, flowers streaked with purple and yellow on the lower tepals. It requires well-drained clay soil and a sunny position.
