Gladiolus griseus (punctatus)

A very rare species, now assessed as Critically Endangered, Gladiolus griseus (sometimes sold under its older name punctatus, now a synonym) survives in only three populations along the southwestern Cape coast of South Africa, up to Saldanha, totalling fewer than 250 individuals, threatened by coastal development. This cormous Iridaceae, known as the Grey Afrikaner, grows in calcareous sand or limestone gravel in coastal fynbos and strandveld. Reaching 45 to 75 cm tall, it bears sweetly scented purple, mauve and lime-green flowers in spring. Cultivation requires well-drained soil and full sun, with awareness of its conservation status.
