Endemic to the Kamiesberg in central Namaqualand, South Africa, Gladiolus kamiesbergensis grows on rocky sites within shrubby fynbos. This cormous plant reaches 45 to 90 cm tall and bears, in spring, a spike of small, pale lilac flowers speckled with tiny purple dots inside and on the reverse of the tepals, the lower lateral tepals marked yellow at the base. The sweetly scented flowers are thought to be pollinated by long-tongued bees. Cultivation requires well-drained, sandy or stony soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy typical of winter-rainfall Cape geophytes.
