Gladiolus miniatus

Endemic to the limestone coast of South Africa's Western Cape, between Hermanus and Agulhas, Gladiolus miniatus is a cormous geophyte of coastal limestone outcrops. From its underground corm rises a 15–40 cm stem bearing narrow leaves and a spring spike of salmon-coloured flowers marked with a red midline on the tepals. It grows in full sun, in well-drained calcareous soil, under a winter-rainfall climate, and becomes dormant in summer after flowering, when it should be kept dry.
