Gladiolus monticola

Endemic to the Cape Peninsula in South Africa, where it grows on sandstone outcrops of the Back Table, Constantiaberg and southward toward Simon's Town, Gladiolus monticola is a cormous geophyte with a fibrous, globose corm reaching 45 cm in height. Closely related to Gladiolus brevifolius, it is distinguished by a longer perianth tube of 22 to 30 mm, sharply bent at the throat, and by a yellow median stripe bordered with pink on the tepals. Its name, meaning 'mountain dweller', reflects its rocky habitat. It requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer dormancy.
