Gladiolus nerinioides

Native to rocky sandstone slopes and cliffs of the southwestern Cape, South Africa, Gladiolus nerinioides flowers from January to March, before its leaves appear. This 35-60 cm cormous geophyte produces a dense spike of funnel-shaped, scarlet-red flowers. It requires well-drained soil on rocky slopes, a sunny position, and a dry summer rest typical of the Cape's Mediterranean climate.
