Gladiolus ?sp? ‘ Mc Gregor’

The precise identification of this Gladiolus remains uncertain; the epithet «Mc Gregor» probably refers to the locality of McGregor, a small town in the Western Cape on the edge of the Robertson Karoo (South Africa), a region rich in wild, endemic Gladiolus species with very restricted distributions. Like most South African Gladiolus from this semi-arid area, it is likely a cormous geophyte, with narrow sword-shaped leaves, flowering in spring on a stem bearing a spike of funnel-shaped flowers. Cultivation, in full sun and free-draining soil, must observe the dry summer dormancy characteristic of the Cape.
