Gladiolus splendens

Most unsual and elegant coral red flowers are borne on a 70-80 cm high spike. In sheltered areas it can be planted in the open ground where it can grow with an unexpected vigour. Prefers to be planted early on in the season.
The genus
The horticultural gladiolis, very popular summergflowering bulbs, are hybrids mostly derived from subtropical species for springplanting. However, there is a very important section of wintergrowing species from the Cape and the Mediterranean area. They are springflowering and very suitable for the Mediterranean climat to be planted in late summer or Autumn. The South African winter-growing species are generally elegant rather than exuberant. Many have well-spaced tubular flowers rather than a lot of them crammed together. A very good potplant in a Mediterranean climate.
