Gladiolus stefaniae

A rare South African Iridaceae known from two disjunct populations in the southern Cape - the Langeberg near Montagu and the Potberg in the Overberg - Gladiolus stefaniae grows on rocky sandstone slopes in fynbos. This cormous geophyte reaches 60 cm and bears large funnel-shaped flowers, scarlet in the Langeberg population, carmine in the Potberg, marked with a white median streak on the three lower tepals. It is pollinated by a specialised butterfly, the mountain pride. Uncommon but not threatened thanks to its inaccessible habitat, it requires well-drained soil and sun to part shade.
