Gladiolus stellatus

Native to the southern Cape of South Africa, in the coastal mountains from Swellendam to Port Elizabeth, Gladiolus stellatus grows in clay soil on the lower slopes of renosterveld. It is an unusual, delicate species: its flowers, with a very short tube (under 7 mm) offering little or no nectar, show an almost radial rather than bilateral symmetry, and are strongly fragrant at certain times of day. It is pollinated by bees seeking pollen. It requires well-drained clay soil and a sunny position.
