Gladiolus teretifolius

A rare Gladiolus of the coastal lowlands of the southwestern Overberg, from Bot River east to Riversdale and the Langeberg near Albertinia, southern South Africa, Gladiolus teretifolius grows in heavy clay renosterveld soil. This 30-60 cm geophyte is distinguished by its cylindrical (rather than flat) leaves, 1-2 mm in diameter, marked with four fine longitudinal grooves. It produces scarlet, tubular flowers from autumn to winter. It requires well-drained clay soil and a sunny position.
