Gladiolus vaginatus

Endemic to the southwestern Cape of South Africa, from the Cape Peninsula to Caledon and Knysna, Gladiolus vaginatus grows on limestone slopes and clay-loam soils in fynbos and renosterveld. In late summer and autumn it produces funnel-shaped, blue-grey flowers marked with dark streaks on the lower tepals, loosely arranged in a spike on a slender stem. The species is closely related to Gladiolus exilis and Gladiolus mutabilis. Like other autumn-flowering South African gladioli, it needs full sun, well-drained soil and a dry summer rest.
