Gladiolus vandermerwei

A highly threatened species, confined to the Ruens Renosterveld of the eastern Overberg, from Botrivier to Heidelberg, southern South Africa, Gladiolus vandermerwei grows in shale-derived soil in dry areas. This 30-60 cm geophyte, with globe-shaped, papery-tunicked corms, bears 5 to 7 narrowly lance-shaped leaves. It produces a spike of 3 to 8 bright scarlet-red flowers, yellow on the lower half of the lower tepals, with a narrow, cylindrical tube, pollinated by sunbirds. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
