Gladiolus vigilans

Endemic to the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, Gladiolus vigilans is a cormous geophyte with particularly variable flower colour - pink to reddish or light purple with contrasting white markings, or white to cream through to orange-red, depending on the population. Like other regional Gladiolus, it forms a fan of narrow leaves and a spike of funnel-shaped flowers. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest typical of the Cape's Mediterranean climate.
