Crocus hadriaticus (Iridaceae) is a small cormous plant native to southern and western Greece, the Peloponnese and nearby islands. In autumn it bears white flowers, sometimes tinged purple at the base of the tube on the outside, with orange anthers and stigma. It is one of the species proposed by ancient authors as a possible ancestor of cultivated saffron (C. sativus), alongside C. cartwrightianus. Grow in full sun, in well-drained soil that stays dry in summer; hardy in most temperate regions.
