Haemanthus deformis

Endemic to the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal of South Africa, growing from Umtata to Durban in moist, shaded undergrowth or among rocks, Haemanthus deformis is an evergreen bulbous Amaryllidaceae. Its two to four broad, velvety, grey-green leaves lie flat or spread close to the ground, framing a short, bent, hairy stem bearing a dense, brush-like head of small white flowers with bright yellow anthers. Listed as Vulnerable, it needs light shade, humus-rich soil kept moist year-round though drier in winter, and protection from frost.
